Hoho Action Plus says it needs to raise K9.2 million to pay fees for 62 needy secondary school students in Kasungu District.

Speaking on Sunday after the first fundraising football bonanza between Wimbe United and Kasungu Police, the organisation’s executive director Noah Nhlane said they are only able to assist 10 students out of the 62.

“We have started raising funds to pay fees for students who are on our bursary programme. Currently, we raised K550 000 through the bonanza, but we need K9.2 million to support 62 students,” he said.

Nhlane: We support needy students

Nhlane has since appealed to well-wishers and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to support their bursary programme.

In a separate interview, William Kamkwamba of ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’ fame, who supported the fundraising, said the initiative will help needy students access education in the district.

He said: “I dropped out of school due to lack of fees, but I continued later after receiving support.

“The needy students the NGO is supporting will develop their communities as some will become leaders, innovators and businesspeople,” he said.

One of the spectators Jerome Phiri urged people to support the organisation, saying education was the only way to get poor masses out of poverty.
